Reflective Paper: Trauma (TedTalk)
My understanding after listening to Laura vanDernoot Lipsky's TedTalk is that most individuals do not suffer permanent harm as a consequence of traumatic situations, but that everyone reacts to trauma in their own unique manner. Working with victims of child molestation, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and other forms of acute trauma as well as victims of natural disasters exposed Laura vanDernoot Lipsky to traumatic experiences (Laura, 2016). This became clear later on when she nearly had a mental break and realized it was due to her lack of survival skills. In agreement with Laura vanDernoot Lipsky, I believe that it is crucial for the workforce to be aware of these warning signs in order to comprehend how trauma influences treatment delivery, engagement, and results in behavioral health services and to provide trauma-informed care to the patients.
Although I learned a lot from the ted presentation, I disagree with the speaker's claim that the majority of individuals are unaffected by terrible events. My argument against this view is that many people's reactions to traumatic events in childhood persist into adulthood, manifesting as mood and anxiety disorders and other stress-related illnesses.
Social workers may learn more about trauma symptoms and the effects trauma can have on a person's life, as well as the lives of the people providing care, thanks to this data. As I continue my training to become a social worker, this knowledge will aid me in my efforts to ensure my clients' physical and emotional well-being by keeping them free from harm and helping them avoid other traumatic experiences. The purpose of trauma-informed care is to provide support services in a way that is accessible and helpful for those who have experienced trauma, whether it be sexual, physical, or emotional abuse (Laura, 2016). Understanding a patient's life experiences is crucial to providing effective treatment, which in turn improves patient engagement, medication response, patient outcomes, and the health and well-being of providers and employees.
